Gemini Ganeshanum Suruli Raajanum (Eng: Gemini Ganesan and Suruli Rajan) is an Indian Tamil-language romantic comedy film, written and directed by Odam Ilavarasu and produced by T. Siva. The film features Atharvaa and Soori in the title roles, while Regina Cassandra, Pranitha, Aishwarya Rajesh and Aaditi Pohankar play the leading actresses. Narrating the story of a college-time casanova heading back to deliver wedding invitations to his ex-girlfriends, the film was released on 14 July 2017.
Gemini Ganeshan (Atharvaa) is a fun-loving and romantic youngster, who is an expert at wooing girls. But he is in no mood to get into a serious relationship and doesn’t want to think about marriage. He was named after the legendary actor, thanks to his father’s (T Siva) admiration for the star. The father’s explanation for his Casanova-ish behaviour is that he used to narrate the stories of the ‘Kadhal Mannan’ to him, which eventually made his son a ‘playboy’ because he misunderstood the concept of romance.
The film is about how Gemini fell in love with four girls, rather how he made them fall for him. Gemini narrates the story to Suruli Raajan (Soori), a self-proclaimed don, while he visits the home where his ex-lover Lavanya (Regina) once stayed. Gemini is there to invite Lavanya for his marriage. With the help of Suruli and his aide (Rajendran), they set out to find the girls with whom Gemini had a great time. He lies unapologetically, acts innocent and pretends to be a do-gooder to win the love of girls. Following Lavanya, he manages to impress Devi (Aaditi), Priya (Pranitha) and Pooja (Aishwarya Rajesh) as well. The suspense is all about which among the four girls does he want to have a serious relationship, after realising his stupidity of taking the love of girls for granted.
Atharvaa, as a fake lover, is convincing in his role, thanks to his histrionics and chemistry with all the actresses. Soori excels in a few scenes which are tailor-made for him and Rajendran is just okay. Regina, Pranitha and the debutant Aaditi all look pretty, and have bubbly roles to play, while Aishwarya essays a comparatively mature character. All of them are apt in their little roles in this story which revolves around the hero.
What does not keep us hooked mostly is the sluggish narration in the first half and lack of an engaging romantic story among the various ‘love’ stories. There is a scene in the second half where the hero’s mind voice goes, ‘I didn’t expect this twist’. The irony is, almost everyone in the audience easily guesses the twist. But the movie has a few moments in the second half, with a couple of hilarious scenes towards the climax.
