Senjittale En Kadhala (English: She’s Ended My Love) is a 2017 Indian Tamil romantic drama film written and directed by Ezhil Durai. He also features in the lead role opposite Madhumila, while Abhinaya and Mime Gopi among others play supporting roles. The film began production during early 2016 and was released on 7 April 2017.
Senjittale En Kadhala feels very similar to that of the recent Enakku Vaaitha Adimaigal, worry not, the treatment of this film is markedly different — and better. This one tries to be quirky and plays out more as a coming-of-age story, as opposed to a crass, misogynistic comedy like the other film.
The protagonist is Veera (Ezhil Durai), who is missing! His mother and sister return home to find the house locked, with a noose hanging in a room, his mobile phone left behind and a gun missing. Obviously, they fear the worst and reach out to his friends, who frantically try to get his whereabouts.
Parallel to this story line, we get the love story of Veera and Anushka (Madhumila), the spoilt daughter of a rich man. They have been school mates in childhood, and a chance meeting leads to romance blooming during college. However, Anu isn’t really into the relationship (Veera’s laid-back attitude towards his career doesn’t help), and egged on by her friends, she begins to wander.
This portion feels similar to what we saw in another recent film, Kadhal Kan Kattuthe, where everyday realities take over after the initial rosiness of the romance. However, here, Veera doesn’t become a man instantly. He shameless goes after the girl in the hope of patching up, and often acts like a petulant child.
There is an earnestness about Senjittale En Kadhala that gives the film some appeal, but the filmmaking lacks zing. We can sense a gap between the writing and the execution and often, this comes in the way of us fully immersing ourselves into it. The actors try, but given that the writing is loose and they lack experience, they aren’t able to endear themselves to us. Except Ezhil Durai, who captures the sad sap quality of Veera and gives a performance that reminds one of Dinesh in Atta Kathi, though he isn’t consistent. He is unpolished, but has some potential, just like his film.
