Among its titles, Kanavu Variyam won the Platinum Remi for Best Independent Theatrical Feature Film (Drama) and the same was awarded at the 49th WorldFest Houston International Film Festival. The film also won the Special Jury Award at National Science Film Festival and Competition in India. Kanavu Variyam was released across India on 24 February 2017.
Ezhil (Arun) has always been curious about everything in the universe since childhood, and science fascinated him the most. He had a penchant for electronic products and loved learning the technicalities associated with it. As years passed by, his curiosity, too, grew up with him. Despite running a small electronic repair shop, he aspires to study more and do scientific experiments. His friend (Black Pandi) accompanies him always and lends support for all his dreams. Ezhil’s father (Ilavarasu), too, encourages him and is the protective force at home, unlike his mother who often criticises him for the ‘weird experiments’.
The villagers which often face interrupted power supply hope that a day would come where they needn’t depend on electricity for their agriculture needs. Ezhil takes this as a challenge and starts learning about generating power from wind. A librarian in the village (Gnanasambandam) offers help to him by offering the required books to him. His girlfriend Veena (Jiya), with whom he falls in love with after a couple of encounters, too, promises to be with him till he achieves his mission.
On the other hand, Gopi (Yog Japee), who works in an IT firm in Chennai, quits his job despite being offered a huge salary as he believes farming is the future. He comes back to the village and indulges in varied agricultural activities, and becomes a laughing stock. People who were depending on their lands for long years advise him to stop doing hard work as they feel his efforts would go waste.
How Ezhil and Gopi strive to follow their heart and prove others wrong follows the rest of the story. Apart from Arun who has acted in the lead role and directed the film has done justice to the role of an enthusiastic youngster. As a director, though his plot and intention is commendable, amateurish execution and slow screenplay spoil the flow of the narration. Gnanasambandam and Ilavarasu play their part effortlessly and Yog Japee does his part convincingly.
